Meme coins on the bubble chart
December 2013: two engineers launch Dogecoin as a joke about crypto hype.
May 2021: the night Elon Musk hosts Saturday Night Live, DOGE hits about 73 cents, then slides while he's still on air.
April 2023: a frog-themed token called PEPE goes from nothing to a market cap above a billion dollars in a few weeks.
January 2025: the US president-elect launches a meme coin, three days before his inauguration.
That's the meme coin story in four lines, and none of it was supposed to work. This page tracks the coins that came out of it, sized and colored by how they're trading right now. They're the loudest bubbles on the site, and the ones most likely to be gone next year.
What is a meme coin, if it isn't a joke
A meme coin is a cryptocurrency whose value comes from attention rather than from any product or cash flow. Most have a mascot and a community, plus a supply measured in billions or trillions of tokens, and nothing that earns money. People buy meme crypto because they expect other people to buy it later, and they're upfront about that, which is more than some "utility" tokens manage.
In a way, meme coins are the most honest tokens in crypto. Nobody pretends a frog JPEG has a revenue model. The price is a running vote on how much the internet cares this week (and the internet's attention span is roughly what you'd expect), so the chart is mostly a record of mood.
That also makes them the category where the bubble chart is most useful and most dangerous at once. Useful, because a meme coin's price is nearly all sentiment, and sentiment is exactly what color and size show. Dangerous, because a green bubble here can turn red faster than anywhere else on the site.
Dog coins, cat coins and the rest of the zoo
Dog coins came first and still dominate. Dogecoin set the template and Shiba Inu copied the breed in 2020. Solana got its own dogs with BONK, airdropped to the community on Christmas Day 2022, and dogwifhat, a dog in a knitted hat that reached a multi-billion market cap in early 2024. Cat coins followed, then frogs, then almost every animal with a recognizable photo.
Dogecoin is the odd one out. It runs its own chain and has been around for more than a decade; some merchants even accept it. It works. It just doesn't do much, and it has never needed to.
Kabosu, the actual Shiba Inu whose sideways glance became the Doge meme, died in May 2024 at the age of 18. Her face sits on a coin worth tens of billions of dollars, and she spent her life as a kindergarten teacher's dog in Japan with no idea. There's no lesson in that. It just stays with me.
A meme coins list, and what each one has going for it
These are the meme coins that usually show up as the bigger bubbles. The last column is the closest thing each one has to a reason to exist.
| Coin | Chain | Launched | What holds it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOGE | Its own chain | 2013 | Age, brand, and Elon Musk's occasional attention |
| SHIB | Ethereum, plus its own Shibarium network | 2020 | A large community and an ecosystem it keeps building |
| PEPE | Ethereum | 2023 | The frog meme and heavy exchange listings |
| BONK | Solana | 2022 | Solana's community coin, used across Solana apps |
| WIF | Solana | 2023 | A dog in a hat, which turned out to be enough |
| FLOKI | Ethereum and BNB Chain | 2021 | Marketing, and a name borrowed from Musk's dog |
| TRUMP | Solana | 2025 | A political brand; most of the supply sits with insiders |
| POPCAT | Solana | 2023 | A cat meme that outlasted most of its peers |
This meme coins list follows CoinGecko's meme tag, which grows by the day. Most of the top meme coins by market cap here are years old; the thousands of new ones launched every week mostly never make it big enough to appear as more than a dot.
Solana meme coins and the pump.fun assembly line
Solana meme coins became their own industry in 2024. Pump.fun, which launched in January that year, let anyone create a token in seconds for almost nothing, with a built-in price curve that rose as people bought. Once a token got big enough, its liquidity moved to a Solana DEX and trading opened to everyone.
The result was millions of tokens. One 2025 analysis found that the overwhelming majority of tokens launched there showed signs of a rug pull or a pump-and-dump. That's not a flaw in the launchpad so much as an accurate description of what most people used it for.
Solana won this game because it's cheap and fast, which is the same reason so many layer 1 blockchains by market cap now court meme traders. Base did the same on the layer 2 side, and plenty of layer 2 crypto activity in 2024 was memes.
On chains this cheap, the fee is never the problem. Thin liquidity is: a meme coin pool with a few thousand dollars in it can move 20% on a single buy, so learn how to calculate slippage before you trade anything that launched this month.
Celebrity coins and the TRUMP problem
The TRUMP token launched on January 17, 2025, and within two days its fully diluted value was briefly in the tens of billions. Around 80% of the supply was held by companies tied to the Trump family, released on a schedule over years. Buyers knew that, or could have. The price later fell by most of its peak value.
Celebrity coins mostly follow the same arc, only faster. A token tied to the internet personality known as the "Hawk Tuah girl" lost around 90% within hours of launch in December 2024. LIBRA, promoted by Argentina's president in February 2025, did nearly the same on a much bigger stage, you know? The famous name brings the buyers; the insiders holding the supply decide when they leave.
Even the AI wave ran through meme coins. Most ai agent tokens in late 2024 were meme coins with a chatbot attached, and they traded like it.
Other people find meme coins fun to trade. I find them exhausting, and I've never met anyone who could time them consistently, but I can see the appeal of a market that's honest about being a casino.
Meme coins as a market mood ring
Meme coins are where risk appetite shows up first. When they all turn green at once, it usually means traders are feeling rich and reaching further out on the risk curve; when they bleed while Bitcoin holds steady, money is retreating to safer coins. The fear and greed index tells the same story in one number, and the meme bubbles tend to confirm it a day or two early.
Compare this page with the crypto bubble chart on the home page during a big move. If memes are up far more than everything else, the market is in its giddy phase. That phase has never lasted long.
Meme coin questions people ask
Are meme coins a good investment?
It depends on what you mean by investment, and nothing here is financial advice. Meme coins have no earnings. Their price depends entirely on future attention. A few early buyers made fortunes; most people who buy after a coin trends lose money. If you treat a meme coin as a lottery ticket you can afford to lose, the risk is at least clear. If you treat it as savings, it isn't.
Why do meme coins cost a fraction of a cent?
Because they have enormous supplies. Shiba Inu has hundreds of trillions of tokens, so each one is worth very little even when the total is worth billions. A low price per coin feels cheap, but it's the market cap that matters, and a coin at $0.00001 can be far more expensive than one at $50.
How do I spot a rug pull in a new meme coin?
Check who holds the supply and whether the liquidity is locked. Tools like RugCheck for Solana tokens and DEX Screener for any chain show holder concentration and liquidity, plus whether the developer can still change the contract, and they're good at catching the obvious traps. If a handful of wallets own most of the supply, or the developer can still mint tokens, walk away.
Can a meme coin ever have real utility?
Some try. Shiba Inu built its own network, and BONK is used inside Solana apps. None of it has changed what drives their prices, which is still attention. Utility hasn't made meme coins less volatile so far.
What a 1,000x actually requires
Say a new meme coin has a $5 million market cap and someone on social media promises it'll go 1,000x. That means a $5 billion market cap, which would put a coin with no product among the top few dozen crypto assets in the world. It has happened a handful of times. It has failed to happen tens of thousands of times.
Before buying into that kind of promise, put the target number next to real coins with a crypto market cap comparison, and run the trade through a meme coin profit calculator with fees and slippage included. The numbers rarely say no outright. They just make it obvious how much has to go right.
